In compiling the Glossary the author has, as far as possible, used definitions and terms that are common to a wide range of industries.

It is important that different industries use the same terms with different meanings and different terms for the same thing. Similarly, different authors may use terms in various ways. Where this is the case, candidates should make themselves aware of the differences and take them into account in answering the examination questions.

The main purpose of this glossary is not to say who is wrong or right, but to give a common vocabulary for the purpose of the qualification. Qualifications, acceptable alternatives or further explanations to the British Standard definition are shown in parenthesis.
